Can We Talk Pass?

I want to talk aerial attack. I like our receivers. Even after Claypoole departed. We tend to be deep in that department; going as far back as the late 60’s. So, the talent is omnipresent. What we want is scheme, utility, strategy, stuff like that. This offense is all about using the parts wisely. So, personally, I will be looking to see how each member of the corps will contribute to the matriculation down the field. Before the season started I assumed that the Steelers tight ends would be the best unit on Canada’s offense, thinking that even last year we saw the potentiality of  “MUTH” doing his thing on a grander scale in 2022 and so far, it looks like I was on to something. So far, Pat Freiermuth ranks second on the team in receiving yards. Diontae Johnson ranks first by 5 yards, but he has 28 more targets. And that is where the tight ends have shined, as a position group they are averaging 7.85 yards per target, and the top four players on the Steelers for yards per target are the three tight ends and George Pickens. Pickens, FOR SURE, should get more targets, but Freiermuth in the middle portions of the field is still underutilized in my opinion. There is no reason for this offensive weaponry won’t eventually get to the next level provided Pickett grows and learns from his limited experience.

This aerial attack has to be assaultive in the mid-range areas of the field. Target the YPA and make the receptions count incrementally. That is the only shot at manipulating defenses to expose vulnerabilities to the run game. I look forward to future developments.
